Phil has historically maintained a neutral position when a client expresses political views. However, given the erosion of our democratic system under the authoritarian and illegal actions of the current administration, therapist neutrality may not be helpful. The preservation of constitutionally protected rights such as due process, is neither liberal nor conservative and the danger is too great for neutrality.
About
With over 25 years of experience as a psychotherapist (independently licensed as a clinical social worker), Phil Harford, LICSW seeks to provide compassionate, respectful care. His approach focuses on resolving emotional and interpersonal challenges often rooted in past trauma, and helping his clients access their own intrinsic healing capacity. Phil is licensed as a clinical social worker in both New Hampshire and Maine. Phil is certified in EMDR through the EMDR International Association (EMDRIA). He is certified in clinical hyposis through the American Society for Clinical Hypnosis (ASCH). He is a member of the International Society for the Treatment of Trauma & Dissociation (ISSTD).
Phil graduated with a BA, magna cum laude, from Boston University, majoring in English and political science. It took Phil a few years to learn that he was naturally drawn to the psychotherapy field. Phil's graduate education includes an MA degree in human development and counseling from Boston College, and an MSW degree in clinical social work from the University of Maryland. Currently, Phil is close to completing a PsyD (Doctor of Psychology) degree in clinical psychology.
Outside of work, Phil enjoys hiking in the White Mountains, vinyassa yoga, surfing the NH and Maine seacoast, stand-up paddling, reading (fiction, psychology, history, spirituality, current events and natural science), binge watching good cable tv series (and sometimes indulging in some that aren't so good as long as they aren't reality tv), movies, and especially walking and playing with his cats Casey and Shae.
