Overall,  goals are about reducing suffering,

integrating conflicting aspects of onself, strengthening one's core self and identity, experiencing greater freedom to live authentically, and finding greater acceptance, flexibility, and resilience along the way.  Phil seeks to integrate neuroscience insights in counseling, incorporating insights from memory reconsolidation research, from positive psychology research, and from Dan Siegel's interpersonal neurobiology model.

Phil uses a holistic, strengths-based approach.  He integrates relational psychodynamic, humanistic, and compassion-focused CBT modalities while also integrating insights from neuroscience, interpersonal neurobiology, positive psychology, sensorimotor psychology & yoga.  Therapy might include “parts work,” drawing from ego-state therapy and Internal Family Systems (IFS).  In general, Phil maintains a trauma-focused perspective drawing from the trauma-model of psychological distress, where trauma, loss, and stress are understood to be at the core of most psychological problems.
